Seminar: The Past and the Future of Rational ‘Turkish’ Islam

Monday, 20 June 2016

This seminar will explore the importance of ‘rationality’ within Islamic debates in Turkey by focusing on Diyanet (the Presidency of Religious Affairs) and its ambivalent approach to superstitions. It will consider how Diyanet’s authority has changed over time, since its establishment in 1924; how it has cooperated with different (state) actors to make rational ‘Turkish’ Islam hegemonic; and the possible consequences of this hegemony for Turkey, Muslim countries and the West.

Gökçen Beyinli from the Department of History at the Humboldt University-Berlin is a CSIA Research Collaborator.

The seminar will take place at 4 pm on Monday 20 June 2016 in Seminar Room 1, Oxford Department for International Development, 3 Mansfield Road, Oxford OX1 3TB.
